Did You Know......

Do you know what your boat is made of and how it came to be? It may help explain the special characteristics of these amazing vessels. Fiberglass as we know it was patented in 1936 under the brand Fiberglas by Owens-Corning. That same year, polyester resin was patented by DuPont™. It was found that the fiberglass could be reinforced with the resin to make a very strong, sturdy composite. The first boat made of fiberglass impregnated with polyester resin was built in 1942 and that is still how most boats are built today. For added durability and style, the fiberglass hull is covered in a gel coat that gives it its slick, shiny appearance. This gel coat is subject to oxidation but this can be prevented with regular maintenance.
